Carole, una joven manicura, trabaja y vive en Londres con su hermana Helena. Muy introvertida, Carole tiene muchos problemas relacionales con los hombres y no aprecia Michael, el novio de su hermana. Cuando ésta se va de vacaciones con Michael, Carole cae progresivamente en la locura y la neurosis. Poco a poco, padece esquizofrenia y vive atormentada porque oye ruidos en el piso.
