En 1905, en la provincia china de Hangchow, un antropólo inglés descubre un fósil, una especie de ser humanoide que piensa que puede ser el "eslabón perdido" de la humanidad. Lo guarda en una caja en el coche de equipajes del Transiberiano. Y así comienza el viaje junto a un variado grupo de pasajeros, un misterioso doctor interesado en los temas de ocultismo; una bella condesa y su marido; un inspector de policía; un joven ingeniero americano y un espía. Poco después de dejar Shanghai, es encontrado muerto un hombre, después una chica.
