Hacia finales de 1800, un grupo de penados, evadidos de un presidio, naufraga y llega a la costa de una isla misteriosa, que no aparece en los mapas. En el interior de la isla, criaturas extrañas matan a todos los que se acercan a las lagunas o pozos de agua. Los presidiarios están a punto de morir de sed y de hambre, cuando el encuentro providencial con una hermosa mujer, que llega a caballo, los lleva a la única casa que hay en la isla, y que pertenece al marido de la mujer, hombre extraño, que se llama Rackhman. Éste concede hospitalidad a los presidiarios, y en la casa y en toda la isla se oculta un secreto que todos conocen, menos los penados. Una noche uno de los presidiarios es asesinado por una misteriosa criatura negra que sale de las aguas.
