It is sometimes said that The Mummy, unlike other iconic Universal horror classics (Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein) lacks a folkloric or literary precedent, which is supposed to make it somehow less legitimate. It's true there is no direct source novel and no venerable peasant legend, but the story of The Mummy was hardly written down on a napkin ten minutes before filming started. In fact it has a number of literary and historical sources. The scene of a young Egyptologist bringing a mummy to life by reading an ancient spell and the disintegrating into hysterical laughter was lifted bodily from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short story 'Lot No. 249'. In another of Doyle's creations, 'The Ring of Thoth', a magically immortalized ancient Egyptian alchemist tracks his beloved over 4000 years to Paris so that they can be reunited. Certain elements are heavily redolent of H. Rider Haggard, and the whole thing closely parallels Dracula, but with an added reincarnation angle which was melded back into the Dracula plotline by the 1973 and 1992 remakes. Of course, the general premise and setting were obviously influenced by the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 (the beginning of the movie is set in 1921) and the subsequent rash of mysterious and violent deaths meted out to the expedition team by 'the Pharaoh's curse'. The events were too recent at the time the movie was released to count as folklore, but I would say they're definitely edging towards it now. The idea of a ...
